Privacy Policy
Last updated: June 10, 2026
This Privacy Policy explains how TrailR ("TrailR," "we," "us," or "our") collects, uses, discloses, and safeguards your information when you use the TrailR mobile application and related services (collectively, the "Service"). Please read this policy carefully. By using the Service, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the Service.
1. Information We Collect
1.1 Information you provide to us
- Account information. When you create an account, we collect your email address, a username, and a display name. You may optionally add a profile photo and a bio.
- Authentication data. If you sign in using a third-party provider (such as Sign in with Apple), we receive basic identifiers from that provider as permitted by your settings with them.
- Content and activity. We collect the actions you take in the app, including movies you like, save to watchlists, mark as watched, repost, rate, or review; lists and collections you create; comments you post; and the accounts you follow.
- Imported data. If you choose to import data from a third-party service (such as a Letterboxd export), we process the file you provide to populate your TrailR account. You control whether to use this feature.
- Communications. If you contact us directly, we receive your message and contact details.
1.2 Information collected automatically
- Device and usage information. We may collect device type, operating system version, app version, language settings, and general usage information to operate and improve the Service.
- Push notification tokens. If you enable notifications, we collect a device push token so we can deliver notifications you've opted into.
- Diagnostic data. We may collect crash logs and performance data to maintain the reliability of the Service.
1.3 Information we do not collect
TrailR does not collect your precise geolocation, your phone contacts, your biometric data, or payment card information. We do not knowingly collect more than is necessary to provide the Service.
2. How We Use Your Information
We use the information we collect to:
- Create and maintain your account and authenticate you;
- Provide core features, including the trailer feed, lists, social graph, activity feed, and recommendations;
- Personalize your experience, including your taste profile and suggested content and people;
- Deliver notifications you have opted into;
- Maintain the safety and integrity of the Service, including moderating content and enforcing our Terms;
- Diagnose technical problems and improve performance and features;
- Respond to your inquiries and provide support; and
- Comply with legal obligations.
3. How Your Information Is Shared
3.1 With other users
TrailR is a social product. Certain information is visible to others by design: your username, display name, profile photo, bio, and — depending on your visibility settings — your lists, liked titles, watched history, saved titles, reposts, comments, and follower relationships. You control much of this through your profile visibility settings and the option to make your account private. Comments and public lists are visible to others who can access your profile.
3.2 With service providers
We rely on trusted third parties to operate the Service. These include:
- Google Firebase (authentication, database, and hosting infrastructure);
- The Movie Database (TMDB) (movie metadata, posters, and trailer references);
- Cloudinary (image hosting for profile photos);
- Expo / push notification infrastructure (delivering notifications); and
- YouTube (trailer playback, subject to Google's privacy practices).
These providers process information on our behalf or as independent controllers under their own privacy policies. We encourage you to review their policies.
3.3 For legal and safety reasons
We may disclose information if required to do so by law, or if we believe in good faith that disclosure is necessary to comply with legal process, enforce our Terms, prevent fraud or abuse, or protect the rights, property, or safety of TrailR, our users, or the public.
3.4 Business transfers
If TrailR is involved in a merger, acquisition, financing, or sale of assets, your information may be transferred as part of that transaction. We will notify you of any change in ownership or use of your information.
3.5 We do not sell your data
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it with advertisers for cross-context behavioral advertising.
4. Your Choices and Rights
- Access and update. You can review and edit your profile information at any time in the app.
- Visibility controls. You can control what sections of your profile are visible to others, and you can make your account private.
- Notifications. You can enable or disable push notifications in the app or in your device settings.
- Account deletion. You can delete your account from within the app. Deleting your account removes your profile and associated personal data from active systems, subject to limited retention described below.
- Regional rights. Depending on where you live (for example, the EEA, UK, or California), you may have rights to access, correct, delete, port, or restrict processing of your personal information, and to object to certain processing. To exercise these rights, contact us at the address below.
5. Data Retention
We retain your information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the Service. When you delete your account, we delete or de-identify your personal information within a reasonable period, except where we are required to retain it to comply with legal obligations, resolve disputes, prevent abuse, or enforce our agreements. Some information may persist in backups for a limited time before being overwritten.
6. Security
We use reasonable technical and organizational measures designed to protect your information, including encrypted transport and access controls on our backend. However, no method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security. You are responsible for keeping your account credentials confidential.
7. Children's Privacy
The Service is not directed to children under the age of 13 (or the minimum age required in your jurisdiction), and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will take steps to delete it.
8. International Users
TrailR is operated from the United States. If you access the Service from outside the United States, your information may be transferred to, stored, and processed in the United States or other countries where our service providers operate. By using the Service, you consent to such transfers.
9. Third-Party Links and Content
The Service displays content sourced from third parties (such as trailer playback via YouTube and metadata from TMDB) and may contain links to third-party sites. We are not responsible for the privacy practices of those third parties, and this policy does not apply to them.
10. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we will revise the "Last updated" date above and, where appropriate, provide additional notice within the app. Your continued use of the Service after changes take effect constitutes your acceptance of the revised policy.
11. Contact Us
If you have questions about this Privacy Policy or wish to exercise your rights, contact us at hello@trailr.tv.
